VITA
Dr. Shelley is a Principal of Sheet Dynamics, Ltd., a
limited liability corporation specializing in the development and
commercialization of technology for improving system dynamics of industrial and
military systems and processes with emphasis on manufacturing and processing of
rolled sheet metal and sheet paper product. Dr. Shelley has conducted research
and consulting in the area of testing, modeling, control and design of dynamic
systems for 15 years. This work has encompassed applications in machine tools,
paper processing, sheet steel coating and rolling, rotating equipment in many
process industries, aircraft, space structures, civil structures, tracked and
wheeled vehicles, process instrumentation, and others. Dr. Shelley was involved
with the University of Cincinnati, Structural Dynamics Research Laboratory
(UC-SDRL) for 14 years as a graduate student, Post Doctoral Researcher, and
Research Assistant Professor. He has consulted with 40 national and
international companies and government organizations and has conducted
sponsored research for numerous corporations and funding agencies.

RECENT RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT AND CONSULTING ACTIVITIES
- Tension reel system dynamic analysis, AK Steel. Coupled
torsional/lateral dynamic analysis to reduce rolling mill sheet tension
variation and tension reel assembly vibration induced fatigue damage. This
ongoing work will evaluate solution approaches including active vibration
control and active drive motor control.
- Development and application of adaptive spatio-temporal control
techniques to achieve robust, high performance and reliable structural
vibration control, Ballistic Missile Defense Organization. Structural
vibration suppression utilizing sensor and actuator arrays.
- Laser cutting machine control system optimization, Major Machine
Tool Manufacturer- Vibration instabilities were being experienced with a
high speed "state of the art" laser cutting machine. Experimental testing was
conducted to characterize the instability mechanisms and develop a computer
model of the control system to evaluate solutions.
- Process improvements for rolling and coating sheet steel, Sheet
Dynamics, Ltd,/LTV Steel. Modeling and design of active magnetic bearing
control strategies to control vibration and shape of sheet product during
rolling and coating operations for quality improvement and cost reduction.
- Process improvements for paper production, Sheet Dynamics,
Ltd./Abitibi-Price, Inc. Modeling, testing and design studies investigating
solutions to calender barring - self excited vibration of paper machine
calender stacks which causes variation in paper thickness, gloss, printability
and strength.
- Improved flight flutter test techniques, Boeing Aircraft Co.
Developing improved flight flutter test techniques to improve reliability and
reduce cost of aircraft flight test programs.
- Innovative concepts for torsional vibration control, Stahl
International, Inc. Design and feasibility study for innovative proprietary
product to control torsional vibration on transportation vehicles and
